Travelers seeking peace and serenity will find 'New Chums Beach' as a hidden treasure on the map of New Zealand. Voted among the top 20 beaches in the world by The Observer 2006 ,it is a delight to those who knows about its existence & have visited it.
New Chums beach is located nine miles east of Coromandel Town. 30-40 minutes walk from Whangapoua Beach to the rocks and finally on to a track leading to the saddle and heading towards the golden sand - that's your first glimpse of New Chums beach. Going to New Chums through the narrow bit where there's risk of you tumbling down the rock, to the track which is too steep, might not sound good to you; but once you reach there, you'll feel that the place is worth your walk. The wooded Nikau and Pohutukawa trees brushes the coast line across the beautiful stretch of the golden sand on this unexploited beach of the Coromandel Peninsula. The experience is truly adventurous and breathtaking.
Visiting New Chums would be a perfect picnic, but you'll be required to backpack your stuff like food, water & clothes as you won't find anything there, as it is among the most deserted beaches of New Zealand. It would be easier to visit the New Chums Beach on a low tide as you'll be needed to walk around rocks to reach the track. Surfers will enjoy the paradise of waves full of energy. Surf dumps hard on to the eastern side of the beach, so better take a small 10-15 min walk towards the other end to enjoy snorkeling and gentle swimming . Being one of the most widely stretched, undeveloped beach, you will find private spots there even on Christmas & New year. You can also have camp fire under the sky and enjoy the soothing sound of ocean.
Whangapoua is the nearest place to stay, offering you many rent-able baches ranging from cheap, cheerful to luxurious. Alternatively, New Chums beach can also be approached by boat from Whangapoua Village. You will surely love this little piece of paradise and cherish its beautiful memories for lifetime.
